Proton Mail interface overview

As the founding Lead Designer at Proton, I built the design foundation across its privacy-focused products and led the team as the company grew from an Indiegogo campaign to 100M+ users.

My main priorities have been unblocking the development process at the beginning, by quickly refreshing the ProtonMail Beta web app and redesigning the website for the official launch. From there on, I have started to build up a design team and owned all design related aspects of the company and products. After the initial ProtonMail web app release, I have focused on the mobile apps for Android and iOS. Followed by the first versions of ProtonVPN, for Windows, MacOS, Android and iOS. ProtonVPN served as a new design base for the Proton product palette and was our entry point to a unified design language and design system. We continued with more products, like ProtonCalendar, ProtonDrive, ProtonBridge and more experimental products which haven't been released.

Since my early days, I'm guided by the credo "holistic, innovative, creative and efficient" - which helped me to build and launch products from scratch, find bottlenecks, solutions, innovations and leading teams in difficult situations and limited resources.

A privacy focused suite of productivity software

Proton Contacts

Proton offers a suite of products as an alterntive to the big-tech productivity tools, such as from google or microsoft. Instead of paying with your personal information and data to the tech giants, Proton products offer a complete priavte and secure ecosystem. During my time at Proton, I was responsible for all Proton products, which have been:

The Challenge

As the sole designer in a fast-paced startup, I faced the daunting task of competing against tech giants with massive design teams and resources. While Google, Microsoft, and Apple had hundreds of designers, I was building Proton's entire design system, user experience, and visual identity from scratch—often making critical decisions in hours that would typically take weeks in larger organizations.

The intensity was relentless. We were growing from 100k to 50+ million users, launching new products every few months, and I had to simultaneously design, hire, and build a design team while maintaining quality and consistency. Every design decision had to be perfect because there was no time for major revisions—users were signing up faster than we could build features.

The biggest challenge was proving that privacy and usability weren't mutually exclusive. Users were accustomed to free, convenient services that compromised their privacy. I had to make encryption feel invisible and natural while maintaining complete transparency about how it worked—a delicate balance that required every design decision to be both user-friendly and technically sound.

The Solution

I built a design system that could scale with our growth, creating reusable components and clear guidelines that allowed new team members to contribute immediately. The key was establishing a "design-first" culture where every decision was made through the lens of user experience, even when engineering constraints seemed impossible to overcome.

I hired and mentored designers who shared the vision of making privacy accessible. We developed a unified design language that made encryption feel invisible—users could drag, drop, and click just like any other app, but with the knowledge that their data was protected by military-grade security. The interface became the bridge between complex cryptography and everyday usability.

The result was a design team that could move at startup speed while maintaining enterprise-level quality. We proved that privacy and usability could coexist, building products that millions of users trusted with their most sensitive data while feeling as natural as checking email or browsing the web.

ProtonVPN

ProtonVPN Interface

ProtonVPN represented a new design direction for Proton—moving beyond email into the broader privacy ecosystem. The challenge was creating a VPN interface that felt trustworthy and professional while making complex networking concepts accessible to everyday users.

The design focused on simplicity and transparency. Instead of overwhelming users with technical details, we created a clean interface that showed connection status, server locations, and security features in an intuitive way. The "Quick Connect" feature became the hallmark of the product—one click to secure your connection.

ProtonVPN's success was immediate, with reviewers praising its "sleek, dark interface" and "intuitive" design. It became the foundation for Proton's unified design language and helped establish the company as a comprehensive privacy platform, not just an email provider.

  • One-click Quick Connect to fastest server
  • Secure Core architecture for maximum privacy
  • No-logs policy and Swiss privacy laws
  • Kill switch and DNS leak protection
  • Available on all major platforms

"ProtonVPN has one of the best user interfaces around, whether it be on Windows 10, iOS or Android. It has a sleek, dark interface that runs smoothly with a simple "Quick Connect" button to immediately connect to the fastest country and server."

laptopmag.com

"Overall, I liked how easy the desktop interface is with the use of ProtonVPN. It was intuitive and not cluttered so even VPN newbies could navigate it. And while Proton doesn't host as many servers as NordVPN or SurfShark, what it makes up for in quantity is quality."

Mashable

Because ProtonVPN puts such a heavy emphasis on user privacy and technological excellence, you might expect ProtonVPN would be an ugly, unusable mess. That's not the case. ProtonVPN has a slick and well-designed app that's easy to use and doesn't skimp on features."

pcmag.com

"To put it straight, ProtonVPN brings everything to make your experience great on an Android TV with ironclad security and all-around privacy protection."

ProtonCalendar

ProtonCalendar Interface

ProtonCalendar was designed with a simple principle: your calendar is a record of your life, and it should be private. The challenge was creating a calendar that felt familiar to users while providing the same level of security and privacy as ProtonMail.

The design focused on clean, intuitive interfaces that made scheduling feel effortless. We integrated seamlessly with ProtonMail, allowing users to send encrypted calendar invitations and manage their schedule without compromising their privacy.

The calendar became an essential part of Proton's privacy ecosystem, offering end-to-end encrypted scheduling that kept users' personal and professional lives secure while maintaining the simplicity they expected from a calendar app.

  • End-to-end encrypted calendar events
  • Seamless integration with ProtonMail
  • Zero-access architecture for maximum privacy
  • Familiar calendar interface with privacy protection

ProtonDrive

ProtonDrive Interface

ProtonDrive completed Proton's privacy ecosystem by providing secure cloud storage that gave users complete control over their data. The challenge was creating a file management interface that felt familiar while ensuring all files were encrypted end-to-end.

The design focused on simplicity and security. Users could drag and drop files just like any other cloud storage, but with the knowledge that their data was protected by the same encryption standards as ProtonMail. The interface made encryption invisible while maintaining the trust and transparency users expected.

ProtonDrive represented the culmination of Proton's vision—a complete privacy ecosystem where users could communicate, schedule, and store their data without compromising their privacy or security.

Outcome

Proton Team

During my time at Proton, we built a comprehensive privacy ecosystem that grew from a single email product to a full suite of encrypted services. The design team expanded from just me to a full department, and we established a unified design language that made privacy feel accessible to everyone.

The impact was measurable: ProtonMail grew from 100k to over 50 million users, ProtonVPN became one of the most trusted VPN services globally, and the entire ecosystem established Proton as the leading privacy platform. The design philosophy of making encryption invisible while maintaining transparency became the foundation for everything we built.

Most importantly, we proved that privacy and usability aren't mutually exclusive. By focusing on user experience and progressive disclosure, we made advanced security features accessible to everyday users, not just tech experts.

  • 50+ million users across all Proton services
  • Unified design language for entire ecosystem
  • Established Proton as leading privacy platform
  • Proved privacy and usability can coexist
